BCAA / Amino Acids

BCAA's (Branched-Chain Amino Acids) are essential in supporting muscle recovery and function as they help stimulate protein synthesis resulting in muscle growth, as well as aid in the supply of energy to the muscle during exercise. Branched-Chain Amino Acids are made up of three specific and essential amino acids (EAA's): L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, and L-Valine. Not only do these essential amino acids help in building muscle, they may also help in the prevention of muscle breakdown.

BCAA Benefits

BCAA's fall under the umbrella category of "essential" amino acids, meaning that our bodies don't produce them naturally. As a result, Branched-Chain Amino Acids must be gained supplements and/or diet. They also have an amazing anti-catabolic function – basically this means they prevent muscle breakdown. They achieve this by decreasing the activity of the protein breakdown pathways as well as decreasing the expression of several complexes involved in protein breakdown.

This means that Branched-Chain Amino Acids not only increase the body's rate of protein synthesis, but prevents muscle catabolism and breakdown, giving a two pronged approach to building, and most importantly sustaining, lean muscle mass.

Other BCAA benefits include

  • Recent studies show Branched-Chain Amino Acids might also help improve your workout intensity by decreasing the brains's perception of fatigue during exercise.
  • They have also shown that dieting while using BCAA supplements can lead to increased muscle retention and fat loss maximisation more effectively than dieting without supplementation.
  • They increase your body's rate of protein synthesis because they have already been broken down into the necessary amino acids your body requires to synthesise protein.
  • They also reduce the amount of protein breakdown that occurs within your body.
