Women and Protein = Results . . .
By Donna Jones,ASN Elite Sponsored Athlete & Australia's only IFBB Fitness Competitior
As a trainer one of the most common things that I hear, especially from women is, do I need to take a protein supplement? Generally, women are fearful that by taking a protein supplement they will become mass monsters over night- (it’s the same with weight training). The biggest obstacle is lack of knowledge.
Protein is essential to build and repair muscle in our bodies, not only muscle but our hair, nails, bone and organs are all in fact repaired by protein. Approximately every 6 months every cell in our bodies renew. To be able to do this we need to consume protein.
Proteins are broken down into amino acids in the body. There are nine essential amino’s that are supplied by the food we eat, these amino’s cannot be manufactured by our body. Keeping this in mind if we restrict our food and or protein consumption then we may not be able to repair muscle after exercise and as most of us realise, muscle loss is detrimental to weight loss (which most women can definitely relate to.)
This is the very basics of what protein does. So now that we can see why we need protein the only other issue is how do I get what I need? Some people find it very difficult to eat solid food every 2-3 hours to ingest the regular small servings of protein required, this is where protein supplements come into their own.
There is an enormous amount of high quality protein supplements on the market today. There are several excellent products available which are especially formulated for women. One that I would recommend is Evolve Diva Whey. Diva Whey is a blend of Whey Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate and Calcium Caseinate – providing a steady release of amino’s into the bloodstream for hours, and of course, tastes great! It is convenient and you can take it anywhere.
Most women will want to change their body shape- tone up, lose fat or gain muscle at some point. The biggest obstacle to achieving your desired results is often your diet or lack of protein. So when I am asked why do I need protein? It’s all there. Ladies you will not get fat or bulky from good protein - you will get results.
If you are unsure about what type of protein is best for you have a chat to the staff at ASN who will cut through all the hype and point you in the right direction.
Until next time.
