Sponsord Team Labrador Tigers Update- April 2009 . . .
Ryan Kogelham
After the heavy rain forced us to cancel the U18s on Saturday, I received an early morning call from Broadbeach on Saturday morning informing me that the 2s were also cancelled due to the amount of surface water on the oval. After we got a slight break in the weather, some of the water moved away just in time for the Senior hit out. Luckily, the poor weather didn’t stop a vocal crowd turning up to Merrimac Oval to watch both sides go head to head.
Labrador started the game well with Captain Aaron Shattock winning some early clearances, allowing big man Trent Knobel to bag 2 goals up forward. The boys looked dangerous early controlling nearly all the play in the first quarter but missed a few easy chances to lead by 1 point at quarter time. The second quarter was very similar, with Labrador having over 60% of the ball but unable to get the score on the board, and Broadbeach making the most of their opportunities. 2008 Club Champion Todd Featherstone was stretchered from the ground just prior to half time with a knee injury and club legend Nathan Gurciullo was assisted from the ground with an ankle injury, after both players were giving us plenty of grunt and drive.
Broadbeach ran really hard in the second half and continued to make the most of their opportunities, where Labrador couldn’t get much to go right on the day, in a day where Mark Vigus kicked 6 points and 2 on the full.
Broadbeach finally ran out winners by 50 points in a game where the scoreboard didn’t really reflect the game. New recruit and first senior game player Elliot Bath was terrific for the Tigers, as to were other new recruits Dustin Mills and Jordan Doering who both provided us with plenty of run and good use of the ball in wet and slippery conditions.
Adam Cooke was instrumental in the ruck with a limited preparation due to his beautiful wife Jenny giving birth to their first born son on Tuesday night, and 18 year old Michael Barnes and Michael Talbot were both solid for the Tigers.
Goal Kickers: Knobel 3, Featherstone, McGennesken
Best Players: Bath, Mills, Cooke, M Talbot, Barnes & Doering
A big thank you to the boys that supported us with off field duties in Sam Folan, Chad Owens, Troy Armstrong, Jesse Brierley, Luke Licht, Scott Trembath, Luke Carland and Bryce Retzlaff.
