GOLD COAST CONNECTION TO BURMA LENDS A HAND ON THE GROUND! . . .
Arakan Chief Instructor, Robert Kyaw
A local Gold Coast Burmese Martial Arts Club, Arakan Martial Art, is taking up the fight to help the people of Burma following the devastation of Cyclone Nargis.
Burmese born founder of the 600 member club Robert Kyaw, is driving the mammoth task of raising over $50,000 in one day!
With an estimated 216,000 lives lost and 220,000 people missing this kind of help will enable Save the Children Australia to make huge inroads more quickly.
"I have fond memories of growing up in Burma. My relatives and friends were always loving and joyful despite the hardships and challenges that they faced every day." he said. "Burmese people are like us. They are very family oriented, they're kind, thoughtful and peace loving. I can't begin to imagine what they are going through right now".
"At a time like this we need to put the political issues to one side and concentrate whole heartedly on the people that need our help," he said. "You have to believe everyone can make a difference. It really can't get any worse for them so anything we do here is going to be significant. We are in the position to do something" Mr Kyaw said "so we will".
On Sunday the 15 of June at Broadbeach State School (opposite Kurrawa Park), all of the Arakan Martial Art Instructors will be donating their time to teach one-on-one Burmese Martial Art to club members and the people of the Gold Coast, with 100% of the proceeds going to help in Burma.
Save The Children Australia who are already on ground in Burma, will receive the donations to continue to provide rice, water, oral-rehydration solution, blankets and materials for cooking and shelter.
People don't have to choose a lesson to donate, they are able to make donations of any amount on the day or at the Arakan Martial Art office.
Apart from lessons, there will also be raffles with prizes donated from local businesses, jumping castle, face painting, a sausage sizzle and much more.
Everyone is welcome and for more information on the Burma Relief Appeal or to book a lesson call 1300 13 23 11
